The Adventures of Benny and His Bunny Friends
Once upon a time, in a snug burrow beneath a grand old oak tree, lived four little rabbits named Benny, Lily, Rosie, and Max.
One bright morning, their wise mother, Mrs. Bunny, gathered them around and said, “My dear little ones, you may play in the fields or explore down the lane, but remember, stay away from Mr. Thompson’s garden. Your father had a little mishap there and ended up in a pie baked by Mrs. Thompson.”
“Now, off you go and behave yourselves. I have some errands to run,” Mrs. Bunny said with a warm smile. She took her basket and umbrella and set off through the meadow to the baker’s. She bought a loaf of fresh bread and some sweet berry buns.
Lily, Rosie, and Max, being well-behaved bunnies, happily hopped down the lane to pick juicy blackberries. Meanwhile, Benny, the most curious and mischievous of them all, scampered straight to Mr. Thompson’s garden and squeezed under the gate!
In the garden, Benny nibbled on crisp lettuces, crunchy carrots, and juicy radishes. But soon, his tummy began to ache, and he decided to search for some parsley to help settle his stomach. As he rounded a corner of the garden, who should he bump into but Mr. Thompson!
Mr. Thompson was busy planting cabbage seedlings when he spotted Benny. With a loud shout of “Stop, thief!” Mr. Thompson grabbed a rake and chased after Benny. Terrified, Benny dashed around the garden, his path to the gate forgotten.
In his panic, Benny lost one of his shoes among the cabbages and the other in the potato patch. He ran on all fours, moving even faster. Unfortunately, he became tangled in a gooseberry net and was caught by the buttons on his bright blue jacket.
Despairing, Benny began to cry, but some friendly sparrows heard his cries and fluttered around him, encouraging him to keep trying. Just as Mr. Thompson approached with a sieve, Benny wiggled free and dashed into the tool-shed, where he hid in a water-filled can.
Mr. Thompson searched the shed carefully, turning over flower pots, but Benny sneezed loudly, giving away his hiding spot. In a hurry, Benny leaped out of the window, knocking over a few plants. Mr. Thompson, tired from the chase, went back to his garden work.
Benny sat down, exhausted and wet from the can. He wandered around the garden, hoping to find a way out. He discovered a locked door but had no way to squeeze underneath. An old mouse, too busy with a large pea, couldn’t help him. Benny cried again, feeling more lost than ever.
As he wandered, Benny noticed a white cat by a pond, staring at some goldfish. Remembering the tales of cats from his cousin, he decided to avoid her and continued his search.
Benny finally spotted Mr. Thompson’s back as he hoed onions, and beyond him was the gate. Quietly and quickly, Benny climbed onto a wheelbarrow and then darted behind black-currant bushes. Mr. Thompson noticed him, but Benny slipped under the gate and escaped into the woods.
Back home, Benny finally arrived at the safety of his burrow. He was so tired that he collapsed onto the soft sand floor of his cozy home. His mother, busy with dinner, wondered about the missing clothes. Benny had lost yet another jacket and pair of shoes!
That evening, Benny wasn’t feeling too well. His mother made him some soothing camomile tea and tucked him into bed with a spoonful of medicine.
While Benny rested, Lily, Rosie, and Max enjoyed a supper of bread, milk, and blackberries, happy to be safe and sound at home.
And so, Benny learned a valuable lesson about listening to his mother and staying away from trouble.
